Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Medical staff were exposed to the hazard of being infected by HBV and/or HIV through possible direct contact with blood or other body fluids, during, but not limited to the following procedures: drawing blood, giving injections, dressing wounds, and doing dental work. Feasible and useful abatement methods for reducing this hazard, among others, are: implement an infection control training program for employees including, but not limited to, information on: 1. The company's infection control program. 2. Infection control methods such as universal precautions. 3. Hepatitus B vaccinations. 4. Post exposure follow-up. 5. Infectious waste disposal. 6. Tags, labels, and bags. 7. Housekeeping. 8. Laundry.

Feasible and useful abatement methods for reducing this hazard, among others are: Give employees the opportunity to receive the HBV vaccination, at no cost to the employee, accord- ing to recommendations for standard medical practice.

Feasible and useful abatement methods for reducing this hazard, among others are: Prohibit the practice of re-capping needles using the two handed technique. For instances where needles must be re-capped resheathing instruments, self-sheathing needles, or forceps may be used to prevent re-capping by hand.
