General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death of serious physical harm to empoyees in that employees were exposed to cuts of serious nature: A) Donald Dean & Sons, Plant 2 - two chop saws located at the molder line chop saw stations had the control button mounted on the pedestal base of the saw approximately 18 inches off the floor (had been relocated from floor) and was activated by the knee of the operator, and was not guarded to prevent inadvertently tripping and potential injury to the operator, September 13, 1990. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to relocate switch back to the floor and guard it from accidental trip by installing adequate guard over switch, or installing ring guards around existing switches.
