Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to serious cuts: A) Donald Dean & Sons, Plant No. 1 - two chop saws located in Bay 1 and in Bay 2 had the control button mounted on the pedestal base of the saw approximately 18 inches off the floor (had been relocated from floor), and was activated by the operator's knee and was not guarded to prevent accidental tripping and potential injury (cuts) from the saw blade, September 14, 1990. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO RELOCATED THE SWITCH BACK TO THE FLOOR, AND GUARD FORM ACCIDENTAL TRIP BY INSTALLING ADEQUATE GUARD OVER THE SWITCH; OR BY INSTALLING RING GUARDS AROUND THE EXISTING SWITCH LOCATION.
