Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a recognized hazard of electrical shock and burns:
(a)M/V Alaska Packer:  In the pipe room, an appliance cord was run from
outlet
inside metal cabinet to a portable lamp, in a manner where the cord could
be
damaged.
(2)M/V Alaska Packer:  In the hydraulic room, a yellow extension cord was
run
through hole in metal support member to a light, in a manner where the cord
could be damaged.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
be to install hard wiring where needed with adequate outlets.

unguarded and
within an area subject to damage and employee contact.
(b)M/V Alaska Packer:  In the hydraulic room,a 40 watt light bulb was
unguarded
and within an area subject to damage and employee contact.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
be to install guards over the bulbs.
