Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or
serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a
recognized hazard of electrical shock and burns:
(a)   M/V Glacier Enterprise:  Employees working in the engine room
had occasion to work near an electrical control box on a
sandair
compressor that did not have the electrical conductors
installed
in a strain relief or bushings where the conductors entered
the
control box.  This condition exposed employees to possible
contact with the conductors should the conductors be pulled
from
the contact terminals or become abraded.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of
abatement would be to install the conductors through the
proper
strain relief or bushings.
(b)   M/V Glacier Enterprise:  Employees working in the engine room
had occasion to work on or near an electric motor that did not
have the strain relief or bushing installed on the conductors
entering the motor.  This condition exposed employees to
possible contact with live electrical conductors should the
wires be pulled from motor terminals.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of
abatement would be to install the conductors in proper strain
relief and bushings.

(a)   M/V Glacier Enterprise:  Employees working or walking in
engine
room had occasion to be exposed to an electrical breaker panel
box that did not have unused breaker openings effectively
closed
or covered.  This condition exposed employees to live
electrical
conductors should the employee enter the panel box to access
the
breakers.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of
abatement would be to install covers over the openings.
Arctic Alaska Fisheries Corporation was previously cited for a
violation of this Occupational Safety and Health Standard or
its
equivalent standard which was contained in OSHA Inspection
Number 107107567, Citation Number 1, Item Number 2, issued on
6/04/90.
