Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: %% (a) The potential hazards of oxygen deficiency, Toxic substances and flammable gases while performing maintenance operations in the collection pit in the waste treatment area. The collection pit is a confined space and therefore requires special entry procedures. %% Feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include but are not limited to: %% (1) Implementation of the Boeing Corporation's corporate confined space entry procedure OSHA 2-108-1. %% (20 Training of the attendents and authorized entrants which includes (i) rescue and emergency procedures, (ii) use of testing and monitoring equipment and (iii) hazaed recognition. %% (3) Test the environmental conditions prior to entry and periodically during entry to ensure that acceptable conditions are present and maintained. %%
