Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a damaged wire rope: FIRST DIE CASTING BAY, ZINC AND ALUMINUM BAY: THE WIREROPE PROVIDED ON THE FIVE TON SHEPARD NILES CRANE, SERIAL NUMBER 133619, WAS KINKED AND HAD FOUR BROKEN WIRES IN ONE ROPE LAY. ONE FEASIBLE AND USEFUL ABATEMENT METHOD, AMONG OTHERS, IT TO: 1.REPLACE THE DAMAGED RUNNING ROPE. 2.IMPROVE THE EXISTING WIRE ROPE INSPECTION PROGRAM TO INCLUDE A THOROUGH INSPECTION, ESPECIALLY ALONG THE "DEAD" END OF THE ROPE, WHERE THE MOST WEAR IS LIKELY TO OCCUR. 3.INSTRUCT EMPLOYEES IN THE PROPER OPERATION OF THE CRANE AND, IF NEEDED, PROVIDE OTHER TYPES OF LIFTING EQUIPMENT WHERE THE USE OF THE OVERHEAD CRANE IS NOT PRACTICAL, SUCH AS FOR PULLING/POSITIONING DIES.NG/POSITIONING
