Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
STEP #1 employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment
which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to
cause death or serious physical harm to employee(s) in that employee(s)
were exposed to the hazards of performing  tasks requiring repetitive
motions which  result in stresses that had caused, were causing or were
likely to cause Repetitive Motion Disorders, such as Upper Extremity
Cummulative Trauma Disorder (UECTD); Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS):
(a)  Front End Checkstand Operations - Not all employees
with the job titles of Cashiers have received training
and education; on or about 9/1/92.
ABATEMENT NOTES:
Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard is to
establish and enforce adequate procedures such as those stipulated in:

Elements essential to an Ergonomics Management Program include at a
minimum:
(1)  Training and Education for exposed employees, including
methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the training.
Retraining should be done annually, or as operations
change.  Training shall include basic ergonomic
principles and the identification workplace ergonomic
stressors or its managerial employees, incumbent
cashiers and all newly hired cashiers.  Attendance
records for all persons participating in the training
shall be kept.  As part of the program, the employer
shall show to all such employees a training video
produced by the employer to specifically reflect its
operations in a manner designed to educate applicable
employees with respect to proper work practices.  This
video will also include training in appropriate warm-up
stretches and relaxation excercises.  Employees will
also receive intructions on the physical symptoms often
associatead with  alleged occupational ergonomic
stressors.  The training program shall also provide for
a question and answer period for all employees who
participate in the training session.
