Section 5 (a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that the
employees were exposed to the hazard of being caught between moving parts.
On or about 02/02/94.
a) Throughout the unloading area, south side of building. Conveyor belts
were not provided with
emergency stop devices in accordance with the applicable requirements of
Section 5.11.2 (c)
General Safety Standards of American Society of Mechanical Engineers,
Safety Standard for
Conveyors and related equipment, ASME B20.1a1991.
b) Control buttons were not clearly marked or labeled to indicate the
function controlled, in
accordance with the applicable requirements os Section 5.11.2 (a) General
Safety Standards of
American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Safety Standard for Conveyors
and Related
Equipment, ASME B20.1a1991.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT
METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS:
1) Install an emergency stop button, pull cords, limit switches, or any
other similar devices.
2) Such emergency stop devices shall be installed in the immediate
vicinity of the operator
position.
3) Control buttons shall be clearly marked or labeled to indicate proper
