Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazards of fire and nitric acid release from the use
of wooden materials to
support the nitric acid distillation unit and associated equipment:
a)  Chemical Operating Room - Wood crates were used as a platform to
support the
hydrometer station on the nitric acid unit.  Exposing chemical operators
to fire and
chemical spill hazards.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this
hazard is change all supporting materials from wood to stainless steel or
other coated
metals.
Abatement certification and documentation required within 10 days after
abatement
date.  The
certification shall include a statement that abatement is complete, the
date and method of
abatement, and state that employees and their representatives were
informed of this abatement.
Abatement documentation shall include documents demonstrating that
abatement is complete,
such as evidence of the purchase or repair of equipment, photographic or
video evidence of
abatement or other written records.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazards of strong acids leaking from overhead piping:
a)  Chemical Operation Room - Employees, Operators, working in this area
are exposed
to the hazard of acid spills or leaks from overhead plastic piping that
has sagged.
Hydrochloric acid runs through overhead piping in the area.  Spacing
between
metal
hangers is up to six (6) feet.  There are obvious droops in the piping,
which thin out the
walls of the piping leading to pipe failure..
b)  Tank Farm Area - Employees, operators are exposed to the hazard of
acid spills from
overhead piping.  The Hydrochloric acid line running along the wall beside
Hydrochloric
acid tank 1 has obvious drooping or sagging.  The plastic Hydrochloric
acid line running
from Hydrochloric acid tank 1 to Hydrochloric acid tank 2 has obvious
drooping and is
not supported.
Among other methods a feasible and acceptable method to abate these
hazards would be to install
stainless steel or plastic lined metal pipes.  An addition method would be
to install piping
supports at closer intervals.
Abatement certification required within 10 days after abatement date.  The
certification shall
include a statement that abatement is complete, the date and method of
abatement, and state that
employees and their representatives were informed of this abatement.
