Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the recognized hazard of being burned by hot zinc dust.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to ensure that
employees are not allowed to be in the "danger zone" of the zinc furnaces
that are "coming on
line, coming off line, or in the production phase of the operation."
Restrictions to prevent
employee access to the "danger zone" should include but not limited to;
training employees on
hazard recognition, barricades placed a safe distance away from the
furnace to prevent employee
access during production operations or highly visible markings placed on
the floor at a safe
distance from the furnace identifying the hazardous area, and caution
lights identifying a furnace
as being in production.
