Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likley to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Drums containing liquid chromic acid and drums containing sodium cyanide, copper cyanide, and potassium cyanide were stored side by side at floor level. This storage practice is considered dangerous because if acids and cyanides are intermixed there is a sudden large volume release of lethal hydrogen cyanide gas. A feasible and useful method of control among others is to ensure that acids are stored separately from cyanides and cyanides are stored above floor level.
