Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to live electrical parts:
a.)M/V Snopac:  In the lower level engine room by the exercise area, a
light fixture
measuring 70 inches from the deck had the protective cover missing.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abating this
hazard would
be to install a protective cover.
b.)M/V Snopac:  In the engine room, two 4-foot fluorescent lighting
fixtures measuring 88"
from the deck had covers missing.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abating this
hazard would
be to install covers on the light fixtures.
c.)M/V Snopac:  In the galley was a black extension cord running through
the door from
the galley to the dry storage area.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abating this
hazard would
be to remove the cord from service, which the employer immediately
accomplished.
NOTE:  M/V Snopac was previously cited for violations of this Occupational
Safety and
Health general duty requirement in OSHA inspection #107106932, citation 1,
item 1,
issued on 9/11/97; OSHA inspection #301495719, citation 1, item 1, issued
on 12/17/99;
and OSHA inspection #301495677, citation 1, item 1, issued on 12/17/99
with respect
to a workplace in Naknek, Alaska.
Abatement Note:  Instance c. above was corrected at the time of the
inspection by
disconnecting the cord, therefore, abatement certification and
documentation
are not
required for this item.  For instances a. and b. in addition to submitting
the enclosed
Abatement Certification form to OSHA, abatement documentation in the form
of
photographic evidence must also be provided for this item.  Failure to
provide such
documentation may result in additional citations and penalties."
