Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Seccion 6(a) de la Ley de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de Puerto Rico: El patrono no proveyo empleo y un sitio de empleo libre de riesgos reconocidos que esten causando o que puedan causar muerte o dano fisico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados estaban expuestos a: At the washing tray area in "Centro de Distribucion de Alimentos" the work environment was not kept in sanitary condition. After the samples of the environment atmosphere the growth in the selective media (Malt Extract Agar) showed the presence of fungi. Some of the fungi founded in the samples were: Aspergillus sydowii, Aspergillus versicolor, Aspergillus ustus and Cladosporium species. The employees were washing the trays and serving the food in the trays. Hazard: Exposure to fungi. Among other methods of abatement some feasible and acceptable are: 1) Cleaning and desinfect all the areas that present the greater concentration of fungi. The cleaning shall be made with a vacuum cleaner with an high efficiency filter and the persons who make this job shall be protected with a mask. The desinfectant Amphyl in aerosol is excellent to eliminate the fungi. Another possible desinfectants are Lysol and Cloro. 2) Repair the fumes extractor of the tray washer. 3) Regularly microbiological samples should be maked to prevent the growth of fungi that cause respiratory diseases like pheumoniae,asmatic access, infections of pulmonary aspergilluses. En el area de lavado de bandejas en el Centro de Distribucion de Alimentos el ambiente de trabajo no se mantuvo en condicion sanitaria. Luego de tomar las muestras del ambiente, el crecimiento en el medio selectivo ("Malt Extract Agar") mostro la presencia de hongos. Algunos de los hongos encontrados en las muestras fueron: Aspergillus sydowii, Aspergillus versicolor, Aspergillus ustus y Cladosporium species. Los empleados se encontraban lavando bandejas y sirviendo la comida en las bandejas. Riesgo: Exposicion a hongos. Entre otros metodos de correccion algunos factibles y aceptables son: 1) Limpiar y desinfectar todas las areas que presenten la mayor concentracion de hongos. La limpieza debera hacerse con una aspiradora que tenga un filtro de alta eficiencia y laspersonas que realicen este trabajo deberan estar protegidos con una mascarilla. El desinfectante "Amphyl" en aerosol es excelente para eliminar los hongos. Otros posibles desinfectantes son Lysol y Cloro. 2) Reparar el extractor de vapores de la maquina de lavar bandejas. 3) Se deben realizar muestreos microbiologicos para prevenir el crecimiento de hongos causantes de enfermedades respiratorias tales como: pulmonia, accesos asmaticos e infecciones de aspergilosis pulmonar.
