Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls onto an active freeway: (a)Monte Vista I-15 Overpass, Pocatello, ID - On or about 17 July 1997, and at times prior thereto, an iron worker access work areas on the steel bridge structure by sliding his feet on approximately a 6 1/2 inch lip of the I-Beam while holding on to the mud pins on the top of the I-Beam. The iron worker was exposed to approximately a 20 feet fall hazard above the roadway, while vehicle traffic passed underneath him. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO INSTALL A CATENARY LINE SYSTEM FOR FALL ARREST." Note: Abatement certification and supporting documentation are required for this item.
