Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which is free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential fire and explosion hazards in areas where fine metallic dusts were generated: a) ALUMINUM MOLD GRINDING AREA: THE PUSH BROOM USED TO SWEEP UP ALUMINUM CONTAINING DUSTS PRESENTED A FIRE HAZARD DUE TO THE BROOMS SYNTHETIC BRISTLES, WHICH CAN ACCUMULATE STRONG STATIC CHARGES. b) TUMBLING/DEBURRING DEPARTMENT; THE DRY TYPE DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM SERVING THE DUAL SPINDLE PEDESTAL GRINDER WHICH IS REGULARLY USED TO DEBURR SMALL ALUMINUM PARTS WAS NOT DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED TO MINIMIZE FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS. c) RAMCO BELT SANDING MACHINE: ALUMINUM SLUDGE GENERATED BY THE RAMCO BELT SANDING MACHINE'S WET DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM WAS NOT REMOVED FROM THE SLUDGE COLLECTION PAN DAILY AND ACCUMULATIONS OF ALUMINUM SLUDGE WHICH WERE GENERATED OVER A SEVERAL WEEK PERIOD WERE NOT HANDLED IN A MANNER TO MINIMIZE FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS HAZARDS. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS WOULD BE TO ENSURE THAT ALL OPERATIONS THAT GENERATE ALUMINUM DUSTS ARE PERFORMED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE NFPA 65 STANDARD FOR THE PROCESSING AND FINISHING OF ALUMINUM.
