Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to explosion, inhalation and burn hazards created by storing incompatible chemicals: (a) Location - Water Treatment Room: On or about 3/21/00, a 50caustic soda drum (liquid) was stored on the same pallet as a 66sulfuric acid drum. (b) Location - Lower Level next to Cardboard Box Storage Area: On or about 3/21/00, a 50caustic soda drum (liquid) was stored on the same pallet as a 66sulfuric acid drum. (c) Location - Lower Level adjacent to Battery Charging Area: On or about 3/21/00, a 50caustic soda drum (liquid) was stored under a leaking drain pipe. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method for abatement is to segregate incompatible chemicals to prevent contact and reaction in the event of container breakage/spillage.
