Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On or
about 8/7/98, the
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from
recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious
physical harm to
employees in that mechanics were exposed to the hazard of head and
crushing injuries from a
descending hydraulic automotive lift while working under same:
a- On or about 08/07/98 - Two hydraulic lifts in the rear shop had missing
or inoperable
safety devices.  Two lifts were leaking hydraulic fluid.  One of those
clattered as it was
raised.
Feasible means of abatement, among others, are as follows:
1- Conduct the recommended inspections of the lifts by the manufacturer to
ensure that the locking devices, packings and other components are in safe
operating condition.  Remove defective lifts from service until they are
rendered
safe for use.
2- Instruct and train employees in the proper use of the manufacturer's
devices,
where provided, and safe operating instructions on the lifts.
3- Post and maintain permanently on display the manufacturer's devices,
where
provided, and safe operating instructions of the lifts.
4- Follow the requirements of ANSI (American National Standard Institute)
Standard B153-1 and ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) Standard ALOIM-1994.
