Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees, in that,
employees were exposed to a fall hazard from the elevated work platform.
(a)Calahan Construction, at 7990 East I-25 Frontage Road, Longmont,
CO.  On or before 03-11-97, the employer did not ensure that the work
platform was securely attached to the lifting forks.  In addition,
restraining
means such as railing, chains, cable, body belt(s) with lanyard(s) were
not in
place and used.  Employees were allowed to climb the elevated work platform
to gain access to the roof.  The condition exposed employees to the hazard
of
falling from elevation.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
is to instruct each employee that operates and work from the platform in
the requirements of
ASME/ANSI B56.6-1987, Safety Standard for Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks,
Part II, 5-15
Elevating Personnel:
1.  Ensure that the platform is securely attached to the lifting carriage
or forks.
2.  Ensure that required restraining means such as railings, chains,
cable, body belt(s)
with lanyards(s), etc., are in place and properly used.
3.  Ensure that employees are not allowed to climb on any part of the
forklift
platform in attempting to enter and exit.
