General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards associated with overloading the Below the Hook Lifting Device: a) NAB, 283 Crane, 20 Ton Rated Magnet Beam Assembly - An employee was using the in-house made magnet beam assembly #8 to lift plates that weighed in excess of 20 tons (40,000 pounds). One plate that had been lifted weighed 46,103 pounds. Observed 08/22/97. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible means of abatement would be to ensure that material weighing in excess of 40,000 pounds not be lifted by magnet beam assemblies which are rated for a maximum capacity of 40,000 pounds as per ANSI/ASME B30.20-1990 sec 20-4.4.4(b). Another feasible means would be to provide a convenient method to which the operator could change over from the magnet beam assembly to an appropriate capacity lifting device. NOTE: ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED.TION
