Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
a) In the heat treat area: The gas line near the heat treat furnace was
not covered to
protect it from falling objects. The forklift operator frequently placed
and removed parts
into the heat treat furnace throughout the day. The forklift being used to
accomplish this
task was equipped with one fork extension requiring the operator to
balance the part
being placed or removed from the furnace. This condition exposed employees
to potential
burns or flying objects resulting from a ruptured gas line.
A feasible method of abatement includes, but is not limited to covering
the exposed gas
line with a metal plate fashioned above the line to prevent it from being
ruptured
