Maryland:  The employer did not furnish employment and a place of
employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees:
(a)Date of Violation:05/14/99
Location:Dust Collection System
Condition:The employer was using a dry type collector to
collect and store particles of aluminum
generated during grinding and sanding and:
(l) Had a dust collector located inside the
building.
(2) Had no sign or placard indicating "Warning
-Aluminum Metal Only-Fire or Explosion can result with other
metals".
(3) The dust collection system was not bonded
and grounded.
(4) There was no inert material such as dry
sand provided to mix with the aluminum dust.
(5) There were no Class D fire extinguishers
present.
(6) A motor approved for Class I locations
Group D vapors was used to power the system.
(7) Unapproved electric dry/wet shop vacuums
were used to collect fines from grinding equipment and from the
collection hopper.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement methods
to correct this hazard would be to:
(l) Locate the dust collector outside the
building.
(2) Provide a warning sign indicating "Aluminum
Metal Only-Fire or Explosion can result with other metals".
(3) Bond and ground the dust collection system.
(4) Provide dry sand to mix with the aluminum
dust.
(5) Provide Class D fire extinguishers.
(6) Provide a motor approved for Class II,
Division l, Group E locations (combustible dusts).
(7) Provide approved vacuums, such as air
driven vacuums, for cleaning aluminum dust.
Abatement documentation (photographs, receipts, copies of
programs, training certification, etc.) is required for this
item.red
