General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a). Steel Plate Storage Racks- Employees walking across the top edges of steel plates stored in the upright position nine feet, two inches above the floor to attach lifting grabs were not provided with fall protection, on or about 8/19/99. NOTE: One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to provide stepladders on each side of the storage racks and develop written procedures requiring that they be used to attach the grabs. An alternative method would be to use a set of mobile platform stairs on each side of the storage racks. ABATEMENT NOTE: In Accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19, Abatement Verification, the employer will furnish certification that the described hazard has been abated. Documentation may include but is not limited to photographs, video tapes, work orders, invoices, training records, and consultant reports. Abatement documentation must be received by the Area Director within 13 calendar days of the final abatement date for this violation.
