What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Opening or conducting an inspection is not itself an allegation or a finding that this employer broke any rule; any findings appear as the citations listed below, and citations can be contested, reduced, or withdrawn.

THE CITATIONS ISSUED ON MAY 24, 2001, ARE HEREBY AMENDED TO READ:
Section 50-9-5(A), NMSA 1978 (New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety
Act): Every
employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of
employment which
are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause
death or serious physical
harm to his employees.
The employer has not ensured that proper inspection and maintenance of the
automotive lifts are
being conducted. An inspection of the lifts in accordance; ANSI/ALI ALOIM
Standard for
Automotive Lifts, Safety and Health Requirements for Operation, Inspection
and
Maintenance, or an inspection in accordance with the company's own
inspection procedures
would have enabled the employer to identify and ensure maintenance on the
following:
1) A broken pulley and components of the pulley system were observed
laying on
the floor under the lift. The lift cable was rigged with various hardware
to
control the slack resulting from the broken pulley system. The cables
showed
fraying as a result of the broken pulley. Locking pliers were used in
place of a
guide pin.
2)The electrical cord on lift #4 is showing wear on the insulation. There
was a
significant amount of hydraulic fluid leaking from the electrical
hydraulic pump.
Feasible Abatement: Development and implementation of an inspection and
maintenance program
in accordance with, ANSI/ALI ALOIM, Standard for Automotive Lifts, Safety
Requirements
for Operation, Inspection and Maintenance, to be used in conjunction with
the company's
existing program.
