General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) In the plating department, employees were utilizing the following fall protection measures which exposed to falls of up to 13 feet onto concrete floor and falls of 7 feet into acid tanks: 1) The wire rope lanyard and other hardware was not coated to prevent oxidization from caustic materials; 2) The lanyard and fixed anchorage were not tested to ensure they could hold at least 5400 pounds per worker; 3) The lanyard assembly did not have identification marks identifying the manufacturer and certification; 4) The length of the lanyard and shock mount used as safety protection from falls would have allowed the worker to fall into the acid tank while working on the overhead hoist; A feasible means of abatement, among other ways, would be to follow the guidelines of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A10.14, Requirements for safety belts, lanyards, lifelines, and drop lines for Construction and Industrial Use.strial
