What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Opening or conducting an inspection is not itself an allegation or a finding that this employer broke any rule; any findings appear as the citations listed below, and citations can be contested, reduced, or withdrawn.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to crushing hazards:
Metal shop, robotic welding area - Employees were exposed to crushing
hazards when
they entered the welding robot's restricted envelope. ANSI R15.06 states
in section
6.3.2.1 that "Presence-sensing safeguarding devices . . . shall cause
immediate stopping
action of hazardous motion within the restricted envelope . . .".
Presense-sensing
devices were located in front of three work stations, but the sides of the
benches were
not guarded against employees entering the robot's restricted envelope.
Continuing the coverage of the existing presence-sensing devices to
completely surround
the robot, as is the case with the other robot, would effectively
eliminate
the hazard.
In the alternative
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Machine guarding was not provided to protect
operator(s) and other
employees from crushing hazards(s) created by the movement of the welding
robot arm:
Employees are able to enter the restricted envelope of the robot which
exposes them to
crushing hazards from the movement of the robot arm.t
