Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of getting cut by a chain saw chain: a)Outside cutting area, On or about 5/8/02: A Husqvarna chain saw was being operated without a chain catch. b)Outside cutting area, On or about 5/8/02: Husqvarna chain saws were being started without being controlled securely. Among other methods, one feasible method of abatement is to: 1) Instal chain catchers as required by the manufacturer. 2) Perform inspections and maintenance of chain saws as required by the owners manual. 3) Instruct employees on how to securely start chain saws as required in the owners manual. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
