Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling metal plate wood trusses as a result of inadequate temporary bracing: a) DMD Construction, Ft. Collins, CO: On or about January 24, 2002, the employer did not ensure that sufficient temporary bracing was utilized while employees were installing metal plate wood trusses. Employees of the company received serious injuries after approximately 17 of the wood trusses fell (dominoed) from the Post-frame structure. Feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard, include but are not limited to, installing the roof trusses in accordance with the manufacturers truss setting procedures, or consulting with a professional engineer as indicated in the published Truss Plate Institute HIB Post Frame Summary Sheet titled Recommendations for Handling Installing & Temporary Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses Used in Post-Frame Construction. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement Certification Letter").
