General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a)On or about 02/12/04 employees were observed walking and running across the rollers on the roller-type conveyor on the lift platform of the hot press exposing them to a fall hazard resulting in broken bone injuries. Reference ASME/ANSI standard B20.1-1987 paragraph 6.11.1(b). Feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1.Prevent access to the platform as a general walkway and as a shortcut requiring employees to go around the press to get to the other side,or 2.Relocate the controls of the cold press so employees do not have to cross the platform to reach the controls, or 3.Install tread plates across the conveyor surface so employees can safely cross it, and follow up with employee training describing the hazards of using rollers as a walking surface particularly when they are in a hurry. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
