Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to falling and crushing hazards:
Employee working on the roof of the building were exposed to falling and
crushing hazards.
Employees are required to walk on the roof in the area that the roof
sheathing is visibly rotten.
During the transfer of the gravel on the conveyor belt, the material would
fall off the belt and
accumulate on the roof. Employees were then required to walk/work on the
roof to remove the
material.
One feasible method of abatement is to have a competent person inspect the
roof sheathing and
truss system and replace or reinforce rotten trusses and sheathing. Have a
competent person
inspect the design of the conveyor belt system to ensure gravel does not
fall
off belt and create
an overload on the roof of the building.
