Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to THE HAZARD OF BEING STRUCK-BY MOLTEN ALUMINUM: a)Melt Department, Reverb Furnace #R8, on or about 08/14/2003: Employees charged furnaces with scrap aluminum from the quench tank that was not free of moisture resulting in an explosion spewing hot molten aluminum into the employee's work area. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard is to: 1)Preheat charge materials to remove any surface and entrained moisture, as set forth in ANSI Z241.2-1989, paragraph 5.3.5.4. 2)Establish procedures for charging furnaces and adding wet or dry metal to minimize employee exposure to hazards in accordance with ANSI Z241.2- 1989, paragraph 6.3. 3)Ensure that the shield on the front of the fork truck is extended to deflect molten metals away from the operator to minimize the recognized splash hazard in accordance with ANSI Z241.2-1989, paragraph E.5.1. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
