Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of shattered truss web members: (a) Job site, on April 19, 2004, employees were exposed to the hazards of shattered truss web members when the trusses were point loaded by lifting the top chords with a hook. AMONG OTHER METHODS , ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS TO FOLLOW THE GUIDANCE PROVIDED BY THE TRUSS PLATE INSTITUTE (HIB-91) SUMMARY SHEET FRAME 2 WHICH INSTRUCTS THAT LIFTING DEVICES SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO THE TRUSS TOP CHORD WITH A CLOSED- LOOP ATTACHMENT UTILIZING MATERIALS SUCH AS SLINGS, CHAINS, CABLES, NYLONS STRAPPING, ETC. OF SUFFICIENT STRENGTH TO CARRY THE WEIGHT OF THE TRUSS. Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
