Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm: In the Industrial Winding Department; metal had been welded across the throat opening of the hooks on the jib hoist at Winder 1603 and on the basket suspension device on the 1604 monorail; the heat to which the hooks were exposed in the welding process may have affected their metallurgical structure, diminished their capacity and caused them to fail; employees were subject to have the loads suspended from these devices fall on them. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is replace the hooks with hooks known to be undamaged and of sufficient capacity.
