Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish to
each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free
from recognized
hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical
harm to employees, in that
employees were exposed to inhalation hazards resulting from the defective
and deficient condition of
the exhaust stacks of the furnaces and fire and burn injuries from the
furnaces:
a)The exhaust stacks and duct work of several of the furnaces were
defective and deficient in
that they were rusted, broken and incomplete, thus allowing for the
exhaust gases to circulate
in the work areas, exposing the employees to inhalation hazards.  NFPA 86
Section 5.4.3.1.
b)Flames were emitted from the sides of and above the furnaces, for
several inches.  These large flames
are an unnecessary fire hazard.  NFPA 86 Section 5.2.1.
Among other methods, a feasible method of abatement includes:  Follow all
the requirements of NFPA 86,
Standard for Ovens and Furnaces.
