P.L. 91-596 Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of ammonia exposure due to the unsafe design and operation of the refrigeration system pressure relief piping system: a) Rooftop along the Walkway near the Condensers - Employees using the walkway next to the condensers were potentially exposed to ammonia relieving from the pressure relief piping discharge because the vent pipe was located six feet below the walkway. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to discharge ammonia from pressure relief devices to the atmosphere above the roof, 20 feet or more away from windows, ventilation intakes, or personnel exits, and discharge to prevent spraying of refrigerant on people in the immediate vicinity in accordance with ANSI/IIAR 2-1992, Section 5.4.1.2.
