Ergonomics Hazards.
During the Ergonomics video tape evaluation some workstation related
dimensions were
cheked with the relevant Ergonomics Standard (ANSI/HFES 100-1988,ISO
9241,1992).
The static nature of the job was taken into consideration:
The employee was observed adopting an uncomfortable and awkward posture
and seated
in the chair for prolonged periods of time. The tasks associated with
reading and
reviewing documents that were placed flat on top of the desk surface
caused the
employee to bend her head and neck forward while both wrists and forearms
were
repeatedly exposed to the sharp edges of the office desk. Regular exposure
to awkward
posture of the head and neck contributes to MSDs (Musculoskeletal
Disorders) of the
neck and shoulder area, while repeated and prolonged exposure to contact
stress
contributes to CTDs (Cumulative Trauma Disorders) including CTS (Carpal
Tunnel
Syndrome).
The tasks required the employee to be seated for prolonged periods of
time. The depth
of the chair was 19 inches, when the recommended depth of the chairs is 17
inches
(ANSI/HFES 100-1988, ISO 9241, 1992). The contact stress as a result of the
insufficient space between the front edge of the seat pan and the back
side of the the
employee's knees may impair circulation and cause swelling, discomfort,
fatigue and pain
in the lower extremities.
The telephone is currently positioned outside the easy reach from the
employee forcing
her to bend foward and twist the trunk in order to access the telephone.
Prolonged sitting
without having adequate lumbar support combined with bending and twisting
movements
of the trunk when accessing the telephone may cause discomfort, fatigue
and pain in the
low back area.
The monitor is positioned on top of a credenza cabinet using the same
office chair. As
a result of insufficient leg and knee room available to the employee, the
workstation is
forcing the employee to adopt an awkward sitting posture that may cause
problems of the
back and neck including discomfort, fatigue and pain. Due to the height of
the monitor
the employee is observed extending her neck. There is an excessive
overhead lighting in
the office causing glare on the computer screen that may affect visual
comfort of the
employee.
The keyboard and the mouse are positioned and used on top of the file
cabinet
considerably above elbow height, due to the design and layout of the
workstation, the
employee is forced to adopt awkward posture of the upper extremities when
performing
the job tasks.
Among the correction methods, some feasible and acceptable ones would be:
1.The employer will provide a stand for reading of documents. The stand
should
be positioned on top of the office desk within comfortable distance from
the
employee. The strategy will help to improve neck posture of the employee
and
working comfort when performing the tasks at the office.
2.The employer will provide padding the front edge of the office desk. The
strategy
will help to reduce exposure of the wrists and forearms to contact stress
hard
sharp front edge of the office desk.
3.The employer will provide an adequate five-castor based office chair
equipped
with various features of adjustability including back rest height, lumbar
support,
seat pan depth, tilt and height adjustable armrest. The strategy will help
to
improve posture, sitting and positioning of the employee and her working
comfort
as well reduce contact stress caused as the result tof resting her
forearms and
elbows against hard surface of armrest when performing the task.
4.The employer will provide adequate workstation for performing computer
tasks.
The strategy will help the employee to achive adequate working posture when
performing the job task by properly placing the monitor and both input
devices
as well as having sufficient leg/ knee room thus improving working comfort
of
the employee.
5.The employer will provide an anti-glare filter that can help to address
glare on
the screen caused by excessive overhead lighting. The strategy will help
to reduce
eye strain and fatigue and improve visual comfort.
6.The employer will provide a wrist support. The strategy will help to
improve
posture of upper extremities and her working comfort. As general rule,
both input
devices the keyboard and the mouse should be placed and used close to each
other
and at the same distance from the operator.
7.The employer will provide placing the telephone with the range of
comfortable
reach to the employee. The strategy will help the employee to reduce
bending and
twisting motions of the trunk.
8.The employer will provide training should be focused Basic Ergonomics
Principles, ergonomics hazard recognition, problem solving, proper work
methods
and practices, recognition of early signs and symptoms of MSDs and
importance
of their early reporting. The strategy will help to reduce the risk and
prevent the
occurrence of work-related MSDs among the office employees.
9.The employer will provide developing a mechanism for early reporting the
signs
and symptoms of MSDs. The strategy will help to reduce the risk and prevent
MSDs in the work place.
10.The employer will provide assigning a person to carry-out and ergonomic
program in the establishment. The programs should be focused on the
reduction
of risk and prevention of MSDs in the workplace.

Riesgos Ergonomicos
contribuye
