Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by or crushed by a 38,000 lb steel panel as the panel was being installed overhead using improper rigging of synthetic slings: Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard include, but are not limited to, (1) using slings specifically designed for use with materials having sharp corners or (2), padding the slings with material of sufficient strength to minimize damage to the sling as referenced in ANSI/ASME B30.9 (Slings), Section 9.4.9 (Operating Practices), paragraph (f).
