Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: fall hazards while being raised to work on the crane rails. a) Throughout facility: 120 Duffield Ave., Jersey City, NJ 07302. Employees are exposed to fall hazards by being lifted on a in-house-built platform/cage attached to an overhead crane/hoist. Violation disclosed on or about 6/15/05. Abatement methods: The use of this work practice should be discontinued since it is prohibited by the manufacturer of the crane/hoist and written so in the owner's manual. Alternative methods can include: - The use of a portable stair/platform to reach the rails and perform the maintenance operations. - Use of ladders.
