Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fall and struck by hazard: a) St. Pius Church, Selinsgrove, PA: The bracing of long span scissor trusses was inadequate resulting in the collapse of the truss system during their removal for a structural correction. This resulted in the severe injury of four employees who fell from and were struck by the trusses during the collapse, on or about October 12, 2007. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD OF ABATEMENT WOULD BE TO COMPLY WITH THE BCSI 1-03 "GUIDE TO GOOD PRACTICE FOR HANDLING, INSTALLING & BRACING OF METAL PLATE CONNECTED WOOD TRUSSES AND FOLLOW THE TEMPORARY BRACING DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS OF A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER FOR ALL TRUSS SPANS GREATER THAN 60 FEET. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED
