Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to finger crushing injuries while installing rubber pads
between the vehicle frame
and the lift with a second employee operating the lift controls.
(a) Location - Quick Lube Department at 382 Newbury Street, Danvers, MA:
On or about November 29, 2006, employees were exposed to finger crushing
hazards
while installing rubber pads between the hydraulic lift equipment and the
vehicle frame.
Among other feasible means of abatement methods for this hazard include,
but are not
limited to:
1. The training of employees who operate the vehicle lift as to the
hazards and correct
operation of the lift. ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2000 4.2.1.
2. Requiring through training and reinforcement that only the hydraulic
operator is
authorized to install the rubber pads between the vehicle and the lift.
3. Position a mirror that gives the hydraulic lift operator a clear view
of what now is
their blind spot.
