Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of incompatible chemicals in the flammable storage area that could create a potential for an intense or violent reaction, fire, exothermal reaction, or release of toxic gases. a) Jobsite- 3330 West 4th Street, Trainer, PA. Flammable storage area. a) One gallon (4 liters) of Muriatic acid (Hydrochloric acid) was stored on open shelving along with many gallons of incompatible chemicals such as 4 liters of Methylene Chloride, 1 liter of Chloroform, 4 Liters of Chlorobenzene, 5 gallons of Glycol Ether, 5 gallons of n- butyl alcohol, 8 liters of Propionic acid. Accidental mixture of Hydrochloric Acid and one or more of the above mentioned chemicals could create a potential for an intense or violent reaction ,or exothermal reaction, fire, or release of toxic gases. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to physically separate the hydrochloric acid from the flammable storage and store it in a cabinet with compatible chemicals. Observed on 6/1/2007 b) Jobsite-3330 West 4th Street, Trainer, PA. Flammable storage area. a) Eight liters of Propionic Acid was stored on open shelving along with Xylene, Toluene, Glycol ether. Accidental mixture of one or more ot the above mentioned chemicals with Propionic Acid may have the potential to cause a violent reaction or fire. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to physically separate the Propionic acid from the flammable storage and store it in a cabinet with compatible chemicals. Observed on 6/1/2007.
