Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire and explosion hazards: (a)Building #1 Torit Dust Collector - Air from the dust collector was recycled through duct work back into the work area without the protection of a listed spark detection system, high speed abort gate, and/or a reliable extinguishment system, on or about March 10, 2008. (b)Rough Mill, Torit Dust Collector - Air from the dust collector was recycled back through duct work back into the work area without the protection of a listed spark detection system, high speed abort gate, and/or a reliable extinguishment system, on or about March 10, 2008. (c)Building #1, Attic Area - The two (2) enclosureless dust collection systems with air handling capacities of over 5000 cfm were located in the attic area of the building, on or about March 10, 2008. (d)Rough Mill - Collection points used for manual cleanup of wood dust and other foreign material, including metal, were not provided with a magnetic separator, grate(s) or other type of screening to prevent foreign material from entering the duct collector, on or about March 10, 2008. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct these hazards is to comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 664, "Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities" (2007 edition) as it applies to your operations and equipment including but not limited to the following: *Recycle exhaust air back into the building from dust collectors in accordance with Section 8.2.2.6. *Locate dust collection equipment in accordance with Section 8.2.2.5.1.4. *Prevent foreign materials, such as tramp metal capable of igniting wood dust in accordance with Section 7.12.2 and Section 11.1.5. VERIFICATION REQUIRED
