Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the following conditions:
(a).On or about April 4, 2007 an eyewash/shower station located in the
warehouse
next to the battery charging area for acid, solvents, inks, hydraulic oil,
oil and
other petroleum products did not have nozzle covers on the eyewash station
to
prevent them from accumulation of airborne contaminants.  Employees are
exposed to eye hazards due to the nozzles being extremely dirty.
(b).On or about April 4, 2007 the eyewash/shower station located in the
warehouse
next to the battery charging area was not being activated or inspected on
a weekly
basis to ensure that eyewash/station was working properly and not exposing
employees to a more serious eye and body hazards because the eyewash/shower
station not working properly.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is
to provide covers/caps to protect the nozzles from airborne contaminants
and to conduct weekly
activation/inspections of the eyewash/shower stations in accordance with
ANSI Z358.1-1990
Standard.
