Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the hazard of tipping the Sky Trace Model 8042
rough terrain
forklift. Employees were allowed to perform steel working operations while
standing on a work
platform that was lifted by a rough terrain forklift. The work platform
extended a total of 12 feet
beyond the wheel base of the forklift.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this
hazard is to properly construct the work platform in accordance with
Paragraph 8.24.1(b)
of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B56.6-2002, Safety
Standards
for Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks.
