Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm including severe burns, to employees in that employees were exposed to dust explosion, deflagration, or other fire hazards from electrical hazards. a)Buck Saw Control Room: Employees were exposed to accumulated wood dust of 4 1/4th of an inch deep and an Explosion Severity of 0.5 on top of control room while cutting timbers to length. b)Saw Mill: Employees were exposed to accumulated wood dust of 5/16" to 3/8" of an inch deep and an Explosion Severity of 0.5 on the water miser unit while sorting lumber. Among other methods, a feasible abatement method to correct this hazard, such as, but not limited to: The National Fire Protection Association Standard for the Prevention of Dust Explosions in Woodworking and Wood Flour Manufacturing Plants No. 664, Part C, Chapter 17, section 172, paragraph 1723 states "Interior surfaces shall be cleaned in such a manner as to minimize the scattering of dust to other locations. Therefore, if it can feasibly be applied, cleaning shall be by vacuum sweeping apparatus." And paragraph 1725 states "Blowing down of any surfaces by compressed air is prohibited." The use of a metal detection system to locate metal objects imbedded in logs to prevent metal to metal contact with the saw blade. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED.
