recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to struck by hazards, while working in storage areas, where
damaged rack
components were not identified, and subsequently repaired or replaced:
On or about 12/08/09 at Jackson, GA: Employees were exposed to struck by
hazards, while
performing work in the "bowl rack" area of the distribution warehouse. The
employer failed to
inspect storage racks, in order to identify and replace damaged components.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT
METHOD TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS IS:
The employer should comply with ANSI MH16.1:2008, paragraph 1.4.1: "The
owner
housekeeping, and maintenance procedures including but not limited to, the
following: (2)
Regularly inspect for damage. If damage is found, immediately unload the
affected area and
replace or repair any damaged columns, beams, or other structural
components."
Abatement Note: The employer should conduct regular inspections of racks
located in their
distribution warehouse in order to identify and repair/replace all of the
damaged racks.
In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required
for this violation
(using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
