Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees, in that natural gas
fired burners on the melting furnace located in the melt department of the
foundry were not
equipped with combustion safeguards that shut off the fuel gas if the
burner flame is
extinguished:
a.Multi-Cast Corporation located in Wauseon, Ohio:  On or about February
11, 2011, the
employees operated furnaces such as but not limited to furnace #1 located
in the melt
department, without combustion safe guards that shut off the fuel gas.
There were no
devices to monitor gas pressure, air pressure, the presence of a pilot
flame or burner
flame or a required timed purge cycle.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard
is to equip the
furnace with combustion safeguards according to NFPA 86 "Standard for
Ovens and Furnaces"-
2011 edition.
In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required
for this violation (
using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition,
documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included
with your
certification.  This documentation may include, but is not limited to,
evidence of the purchase
or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence, or written
records.
