Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to fire and explosions from the accidental release of flammable gas: a.On or about December 21, 2011, and at times prior thereto, in the men's locker room, where an odor of mercaptan was present, employees were exposed to fire and/or explosion hazards where natural gas was leaking from pipelines such as those for a gas fired water heater. Feasible abatement methods for this violation include, but may not be limited to, training employees to leave the area and promptly report the leak to the gas company when an odor of mercaptan is detected.
