Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck-by fragments of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastics pipe in the event the pipe ruptured: a) Various locations throughout the shop area: PVC plastic piping was used in exposed above ground areas to transport compressed air at approximately 135 psi pressure. Observed on or about February 17, 2012. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to replace the PVC piping and fittings with metal piping and fittings which meet applicable design requirements.
