did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recogn
ized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm
to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck by f
ragments of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic pipe in the event that the PVC plas
tic pipe ruptured: a)8035 Tanner Williams Road, Mobile, AL 36609; On or about Se
ptember 14, 2011 and at times prior thereto the employer exposed his employees t
o the hazard of being struck by fragments of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic pi
pe in the event that the PVC plastic pipe ruptured: a) Shop areas - PVC plastic
piping was used in exposed above ground locations to transport compressed air at
130 psi. The employer failed to follow ASME Gas Transmission and Distribution P
iping Systems - ASME Code for Pressure Piping, B31. Section 842.3.3 Installation
Provisions which prohibits the above ground use of PVC pipe for compressed air
conveyance. Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable abatement methods t
o correct this hazard are #1) Replace PVC piping and fittings with metal piping
and fittings, which are rated to transport compressed air in exposed above groun
d locations and #2) Replace PVC piping and fittings with Acrylonitrile-Butadiene
Styrene (ABS) pipes and fittings, which are shatter resistant and manufactured
for above ground use of compressed air.ressed
